Reflecting on the day, it´s hard to imagine it´s already Wednesday. This morning, as has been our tradition, we gathered in the courtyard for our morning devotional. Today, Noey shared part of her personal journey story as her devotional. And of course, it brought a tear to my eye. It was a wonderfully beautiful testament to the power of helping others and why we all need to give back when we are able. From there, we made our way to our local breakfast place for our morning fueling.
The Medical Team traveled today to a small school located out in some pineapple fields between La Ceiba and El Pino. Like the last few days, they opened up their clinic in the school and began seeing and treating patients. The team saw over 170 patients today. Shirley I. spent time working with the other nurses assisting the doctor and giving shots to patients. Richard and Cooper worked together seeing patients and writing prescriptions for both children and adults. Pam worked today in the pharmacy translating directions for the doses and other necessary information for the prescriptions. When they were done and began their journey back, their van broke down and had to wait close to two hours for someone to come get them. However, this did not set them back, the team spent this time exploring the pineapple fields, banana trees, and other foliage in the area.
The Construction team (Sandi, Noey, Randy, Chuck, and Terry) worked today to complete as much as the wall as possible. Assisting the Honduran workers, our team continued to mix concrete, fill column forms, and lay brick. At this point, the backside of the school has at least three rows of bricks and the front part of the the wall now has all the columns up and filled. This team worked and sweated to complete the wall and their efforts are beginning to show. In addition, two other members of the team (Barry and David) continued their work in El Pino getting the drywall up in the office. They also have made great progress in their project.
The Education team worked today using the story of "Jesus Feeding the 5000" as our underlying message. Today was a great day! Each day we teach a total of 9 classes with approximately 400 students all together. The classes are very large; in fact, the 3rd grade class had 43 students today....yes, all at the same time. Beth and Jon led music and singing with their helper Carlos; Mary and her helper Emilio taught English as well as the story for the day; Tom and Lisa led the classes in creating little baskets with pictures of loaves and fishes; and Kelly and Harvey along with lil Byron and Delmy played games in the open field for recreation. It is great to work with children and have them love you and be so excited to be with you for even 20 or 30 minutes. I know that tomorrow will be a tough day for good-byes.
There are three other people on our team who spend the day working on logistics and preparing meals...it takes a lot of effort to organize and feed 21 team members and approximately 20 Honduran workers each day. Bryon works each day assessing where each team is, dealing with challenges that arise, and preparing for the following day. Each day is different as there are a multitude of issues that arise from day to day. Shirley H and Larry (who also helps with recreation in the afternoon) spend much of their day preparing lunch for the many workers it takes each day to do the tasks we are working on. Without each of their contributions, all other teams would not be able to function as successfully for sure.
After a little down time in the afternoon and a team meeting, the group divided up for dinner. One group went to a local hostipal and then dinner and a few other groups made their way to the local mall to have dinner and see what a Honduran mall is all about.
In reflecting on the day, I begin to realize just how much a difference one person really can make. Today, I found myself at one point talking to a young man about not dropping out of school and how important getting and education really is for everyone. I feel like that other team members have also begun to have those one on one moments with those they are working with....working to try and help improve the lives of just one person through our efforts and showing that God loves them.
Till next time, trusting in God and living without fear.....
